This illustration describes the pathway of the Abducens nerve (CN VI), aiming to help medical students understand it is susceptible to damage in cases of increased intracranial pressure. The pathway of the CN VI can be traced as it exits the pons, traveling through Dorello’s canal, and the cavernous sinus, to where it enters the orbit through the superior orbital fissure to innervate the lateral rectus muscle of the eye. Different segments of the abducens nerve are highlighted. A lateral inset of the nerve pathway highlights the superior and inferior movement of the nerve as it reaches the orbit, and an additional inset illustrates the complex micro-anatomy of Dorello’s canal.
