DESCRIPTION
I created this piece to visualize an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for a patient with a bile duct obstruction. ERCP is a minimally invasive procedure in which a side-viewing endoscope is advanced through the mouth to the duodenum, allowing access to the common bile duct through that major papilla. A sphincterotome enlarges the major papilla opening. Sometimes a small balloon is employed to remove stones or debris, restoring bile flow.
When designing this illustration, I wanted to make the procedure feel approachable rather than intimidating. I chose soft, welcoming colors and simplified the anatomy to help patients understand the process without feeling overwhelmed. Key elements, like biliary obstruction, endoscope placement, the schincterotomy, and restored bile flow, are highlighted clearly to communicate the steps and outcome in an accessible, reassuring way.
